Lincoln (Two Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack)

Lincoln (Two Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack) Overview

Capturing the danger and excitement of political intrigue, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln chronicles the final four months in the life of the man regarded as America's greatest President. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role, the untold story focuses on a defining moment in Abraham Lincoln's life - as commander-in-chief of a country in chaos; as a husband and father afraid of losing his own son to the war; and as a man guided by his conscience to end slavery. With the Civil War nearing conclusion, President Lincoln fights to convince a fractious Congress to pass a Constitutional amendment that will change the course of history. Facing fierce opposition, he wages a battle of strategy, persuasion, and political muscle to build a coalition out of his team of rivals.

As with the great John Ford (Young Mr. Lincoln) before him, it would be out of character for Steven Spielberg to construct a conventional, cradle-to-grave portrait of a historical figure. In drawing from Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals, the director instead depicts a career-defining moment in the career of Abraham Lincoln (an uncharacteristically restrained Daniel Day-Lewis). With the Civil War raging, and the death toll rising, the president focuses his energies on passage of the 13th Amendment. Even those sympathetic to the cause question his timing, but Lincoln doesn't see the two issues as separate, and the situation turns personal when his son, Robert (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), chooses to enlist rather than to study law. While still mourning the loss of one son, Mary (Sally Field) can't bear to lose another. Playwright Tony Kushner, who adapted the screenplay, takes a page from the procedural handbook in tracing Lincoln's steps to win over enough representatives to abolish slavery, while simultaneously bringing a larger-than-life leader down to a more manageable size. In his stooped-shoulder slouch and Columbo-like speech, Day-Lewis succeeds so admirably that the more outspoken characters, like congressman Thaddeus Stevens (Tommy Lee Jones) and lobbyist W.N. Bilbo (James Spader), threaten to steal the spotlight whenever they enter the scene, but the levity of their performances provides respite from the complicated strategizing and carnage-strewn battlefields. If Lincoln doesn't thrill like the Kushner-penned Munich, there's never a dull moment--though it would take a second viewing to catch all the political nuances. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The Princess Bride (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray]

The Princess Bride (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

In honor of Princess Bride’s 25th Anniversary fans get to vote on the cover art for the new 25th Anniversary Blu-ray!  Visit Facebook to vote until July 11th and the winner will be announced July 12th.

The Princess Bride (25th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story. And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity... The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. --Sam Sutherland

The Last Stand [Blu-ray]

The Last Stand [Blu-ray] Overview

Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez' path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown.

The Last Stand [Blu-ray] Specifications

Any movie that heralds the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to movie star action hero-dom after his foray into politics was going to bear the dubious honor of being auspicious. For better or worse, The Last Stand takes that honor right down the middle of the road, being neither overly ambitious nor groaningly silly in letting this 66-year-old man mug, grunt, punch, and shoot his way back into our hearts and minds as the Ah-nold screen character for which we had such affection. Schwarzenegger plays Ray Owens, the sheriff of a tiny Arizona border burg who likes the peace and calm of his job and his townsfolk friends. When the FBI informs him that an escaped Mexican drug kingpin is barreling straight toward all that calm in a supercharged custom car, he sighs and saddles up, locking and loading with his wacky friends and deputies by his side for the inevitable stand. In fact, one might well call it a last stand. There are very few surprises in how it's all going to play out, right down to the bone-crunching mano a mano fistfight between Ray and the kingpin (Eduardo Noriega) on a makeshift bridge over the border. Ray has a history as a savvy big city cop, and he smells and foresees all the trouble coming his way, even though no one expects him to do much in the way of making any kind of last stand. That includes Forest Whitaker as the flummoxed FBI agent whose screwup sets the stage for the bloody showdown. Others who are surprised at Ray's chutzpah and ingenuity are Peter Stormare (sporting cowboy boots and a weirdly drawling accent) as the kingpin's sadistic lieutenant, and Luis Guzmán as Ray's bumbling sidekick, who unexpectedly pulls out all his stops at just the right moment. Also on hand is Johnny Knoxville as another town weirdo who happens to own an arsenal of antiquated weaponry that's drafted into action for the fiery climax. Like most of the cast--Schwarzenegger included--these guys are pretty much playing it for laughs even though the body count is exceedingly high among the gangs of henchmen and lawmen alike. The violence is also exceptionally gruesome, whether caused by vehicles, firearms, knives, explosions, or fisticuffs, with loving, lingering shots of spouting blood and severed body parts that were clearly designed to prompt cheerfully vocal responses from the audience. This is the first American film directed by Kim Jee-woon, one of the top names from a booming contemporary South Korean cinema machine, and he has brought an outsider's sensibility and stylistic flourish along with the gory details. People who care about such things might have hoped for a little more auspiciousness from him than Ah-nold's comeback (if it turns out to be that). Otherwise The Last Stand is pretty much exactly what most people would expect from such a thing, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that. --Ted Fry

Side Effects (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Side Effects (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) Overview

From Academy Awardr-winning director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) comes this suspenseful and provocative tale of intrigue starring Channing Tatum, Academy Awardr nominees Rooney Mara and Jude Law, and Academy Awardr winner Catherine Zeta-Jones. After her husband (Tatum) is released from prison, Emily (Mara) begins suffering from terrifying anxiety and turns to psychiatrist Dr. Banks (Law) for help. But when Banks prescribes an experimental drug for her, the side effects have chilling and deadly consequences. Full of unexpected twists, Side Effects is the sexy psychological thriller that critics are calling "wildly unpredictable!" (Marlow Stern, Newsweek)

Side Effects (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) Specifications

Few filmmakers have spent more time in the zone than Steven Soderbergh. Since making his debut with 1989's Sex, Lies, and Videotape, the director has shown a distinct aversion to being pinned down, cruising between various genres--caper movies, stark dramas, broad comedies, whatever the heck Schizopolis was--and styles with a fairly absurd rate of success. Side Effects, Soderbergh's last theatrical feature before his announced retirement, finds him in smooth jazz mode, setting up the Hitchcockian premise with chilly wit and a deceptively throttled-back ease… which makes the moments when things go haywire all the more satisfying. The script by frequent Soderbergh collaborator Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) follows a well-to-do housewife (Rooney Mara) suffering from panic attacks after her husband (Channing Tatum) gets busted for insider trading. When a particularly severe incident leaves her teetering, her doctor (Jude Law) recommends her for an experimental drug trial. Things do not go as the label indicates. Like many thrillers, this is probably best experienced cold, with the various twists and turns of the plot designed to especially wallop the unprepared. Even after you've figured out whodunnit, however, the film's construction still offers rewards on repeat viewing, thanks to some amusing, perceptive takes on today's medicated culture (the characters trade prescription histories like business cards), and the tremendous central performances by Law and Mara. Ultimately, though, the success of Side Effects belongs to its director, who here presents an advance class for aspiring filmmakers in how to elevate your material. Working as his own (pseudonymous) editor and cinematographer, Soderbergh appears to be having an absolute ball, setting up the misdirections and left-field shocks with humor, flair, and the atomic clock timing that can only come from long practice. If he truly is calling it quits, he's picked a swell one to go out on. --Andrew Wright

Whisper of the Heart (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Whisper of the Heart (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Overview

From Studio Ghibli, the studio that brought you Ponyo and the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away (best animated feature film, 2002). A chance encounter with a mysterious cat sends Shizuku, a quiet schoolgirl, on a quest for her true talent. Challenged by Seiji, a boy determined to follow his dreams, and enchanted by the Baron, a magical cat figurine who helps her listen to the whispers of her heart, Shizuku embarks on curious adventures beyond the boundaries of her imagination.

Whisper of the Heart (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Specifications

Based on a manga by Aoi Hiiragi, the gentle coming of age story Whisper of the Heart (1995) was scripted and storyboarded by Hayao Miyazaki, and directed by the late Yoshifumi Kondo. Shizuku Tsukishima is an absent-minded, insecure junior high school student who reads book after book of fairy tales, helps her friends, and does most of her chores, but remains dissatisfied. When she encounters a wonderfully supercilious cat on the train, she follows him and meets Seiji Amasawa, a student in her class who hopes to become a violin maker. Seiji's commitment to his dream helps Shizuku find her voice, literally and figuratively: she realizes she wants to become a writer. A statue of a cat in the antique store of Seiji's kindly grandfather inspires her first story, "Whisper of the Heart." Shizuku and Seiji exhibit believable strengths and flaws: their warm humanity contrasts markedly with the shabby superficiality of the characters in many recent American animated films. The lively performances of Brittany Snow and David Gallagher transcend the geographic limits of the story to make Shizuku and Seiji the kids the viewer wishes lived next door. Miyazaki's script suggests that magic can exist, even in everyday Tokyo. Whisper of the Heart was the only film Yoshifumi Kondo directed, but its understated charm stands as a monument to his talent. G.I. Joe: Retaliation (Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy +UltraViolet)

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy +UltraViolet) Overview

In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy +UltraViolet) Specifications

For everyone who rolled their eyes even as they were secretly digging 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra as a guilty pleasure (not to mention giving it big box-office clout), this rejiggered sequel will probably prove irresistible. Hasbro and Hollywood have successfully created a franchise based on toy action figures that were introduced almost 50 years ago, now featuring all the guns, glory, and apocalyptic politics of the modern age. Along with that come the heights of preposterous circumstances and childish fantasy that any 0-plus million action movie requires. The video game quality and action figure/comic book childishness notwithstanding, G.I. Joe: Retaliation is anything but childlike with its incalculable body count, physical carnage, and extreme fetishization of violence and techno armaments. Feeling cocky from their vanquishing the evil Cobra organization in the first movie, the Joes are all the more ready to save the world from itself, making clandestine forays into North Korea and Pakistan with deadly precision. (The dizzying assault on a Pakistani weapons base is genuinely spectacular.) What they don't know is that Cobra has been lying in wait, and that the free world's Commander in Chief (Jonathan Pryce, having a fine time) is being impersonated by the nefarious Cobra operative Zartan (Arnold Vosloo). In the guise of a benevolent leader seeking world nuclear disarmament, "President" Zartan discredits and wipes out all but three of the Joe force. Fortunately Dwayne Johnson is among them, and every moviegoer knows he's pretty much an army of one. The script is so whiz-bang fast and full of impossibly extravagant CGI-enhanced eye-poppery that any synopsis would be akin to, well, 10-year-olds smashing three-inch action figures into each other and making up a narrative to go along with their guttural sound effects. And isn't that a pretty good description of escapism? Mention must be made of an incredible sustained set piece staged on sheer Himalayan cliffs where sword-wielding ninjas soar on ropes in an elaborate choreography that is as inventive as it is thrilling. The finale explodes at historic Fort Sumter, of all places, where the faceless Cobra Commander showdowns with the revivified Joes during "The President's" bogus disarmament summit. The cast is adequate in portraying good or bad real-life action figures with funny names and unbreakable bodies. Bruce Willis seems very happy chomping in to a glorified cameo as the retired Joe commander. Though the Joes carry the day and glory can be claimed, it should be noted that a sequel is teed up perfectly, especially in light of the fact that Cobra pretty much succeeds in its world-domination plan by obliterating the whole of London and its eight million inhabitants. It is the most extreme of money shots, rendered with loving detail; but don't worry, kids, it's only a movie. --Ted Fry

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Three [Blu-ray]

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Three [Blu-ray] Overview

Season Three of Star Trek: The Next Generationr took televised science fiction storytelling to new heights. Now, on high definition Blu-rayT, the seminal season of this beloved series is more spectacular and compelling to watch than ever. Experience such thought provoking episodes as "The Survivors," "Sins of the Father," "The Offspring" and one of the great cliffhangers in television history; Part One of "The Best of Both Worlds". like never before in glorious 1080p with 7.1 sound.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Three [Blu-ray] Specifications

Star Trek: The Next Generation's third year was an important development in syndicated television. After two shaky years, Paramount nonetheless decided the franchise still had plenty to do. Their confidence was bolstered by two significant factors. First, cast uncertainties were finally settled: Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher) was back for good; Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) regretted her first-year departure, and so contrived a return in the Emmy Award-winning "Yesterday's Enterprise"; and Whoopi Goldberg happily continued her actor's-scale contributions.

Second, after the show had survived the previous year's writers' strike, new writing blood revitalized both characters and ideas: Data experienced fatherhood ("The Offspring"), Worf's Klingon heritage kick-started a huge story arc ("Sins of the Father"), and Picard got a saucy vacation ("Captain's Holiday"). There were memorable star cameos: John de Lancie played more mischief alongside Corbin Bernsen ("Déjà Q"); Dwight Schultz played truant in a gentle warning about addiction ("Hollow Pursuits"); and pleasing fans even more was Mark Lenard as Spock's dad ("Sarek"). The strongest evidence that TNG would continue for some time was the trend-setting cliffhanger finale. Fans and critics still agree that "The Best of Both Worlds" (properly introducing the Borg) was one of the greatest tricks ever pulled on TV to make audiences come back for more. --Paul Tonks

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy Combo Pack) Specifications

A fellow named Bilbo Baggins lives in the Shire--but perhaps you've made his acquaintance already? If you're familiar with J.R.R. Tolkien's epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the films that Peter Jackson wrought from them, of course you have. And here is Bilbo, played again by Ian Holm, shuffling about his hobbit hole and recalling a grand adventure from his past, when he left the Shire with a wizard and some dwarves and found a certain ring and a very peculiar creature named Gollum. This is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which Jackson and his LOTR crew have expanded on from Tolkien's 1937 novel. And boy, have they expanded: this 169-minute escapade is merely the first of three separate movies made from that one book, and it gets the young Bilbo (played by Martin Freeman) only a little ways into his grand trek. Many loud, garish battles and chases fill the time, along with some (it pains one to say it) fairly tedious adolescent-level humor. Jackson tends to dally with scenes that might have been more effective in half the time, and the bumptious dwarves are some of the least charming characters in the Tolkieniad. Thank goodness, there's Gollum (played, as before, by the digitally transformed Andy Serkis), who shares a riddle-trading scene with Bilbo that sends genuine shivers up the spine. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf, and a few other LOTR folk make cameos, but the more An Unexpected Journey goes on, the less you sense the magic afoot. Despite the fun moments, this feels like a prologue for the actual movie, which is still to come. (Originally released on many screens in 3-D, the film was also showcased in some theaters in a pioneering format that increased the clarity of the image--or made it look like a soap opera, depending on your receptiveness to the flat, frictionless technology.) --Robert Horton

The Emperor's New Groove / Kronk's New Groove: Two-Movie Collection (Three Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo)

The Emperor's New Groove / Kronk's New Groove: Two-Movie Collection (Three Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo) Overview

Experience Disney's outrageously funny animated comedies, The Emperor's New Groove and Kronk's New Groove - presented for the first time ever on Blu-ray, with perfect picture and sound. Featuring an all-star cast and the Academy Award-nominated song, "My Funny Friend And Me!" (best music, original song, Sting, 2000), this 2-movie collection is king-size fun for the entire family! When the young and spoiled Emperor Kuzco is transformed into a llama by his sinister advisor Yzma, it takes a thoughtful peasant to restore the kingdom and show Kuzco just how much fun it is to be true to yourself. Then laugh along with Yzma's hilarious henchman Kronk as he cooks up big trouble in the hilarious sequel. These two comedy classics are better than ever on Disney Blu-ray!

The Emperor's New Groove / Kronk's New Groove: Two-Movie Collection (Three Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo) Specifications

Originally developed as an epic called Kingdom of the Sun, The Emperor's New Groove lost scale and most of Sting's song score (some of which can be heard on the soundtrack) on its way to the screen. The end result is the lightest Disney film in many a moon, a joyous romp akin to Aladdin in its quotient of laughs for kids and adults. The original story centers on the spoiled teenage emperor Kuzco (David Spade), who enjoys getting the best of his Aztecan subjects. When he fires Yzma (Eartha Kitt), his evil sorceress, she seeks revenge and turns Kuzco into a llama with the help of her hunk of the month, a lunk named Kronk (Patrick Warburton). Alone in the jungle, the talking llama is befriended by Pacha (John Goodman), who has just been told to vacate his pastoral home by the human Kuzco. What's an ego to do? That's pretty much the story and the characters--simple, direct, fun--a Disney film on a diet. For any fan of the acidic humor of Spade, this is essential viewing. As narrator of his tale, Kuzco uses a sarcastic tone to keep the story jumping with plenty of fun asides (he even "stops" the film at one point to make sure you know the story is about him). Even better is character actor Warburton (Elaine's stuck-up boyfriend on Seinfeld), who steals every scene as the dim-witted, but oh-so-likable Kronk. There's even a delicious Tom Jones number that starts the film off with a bang. --Doug Thomas

Cloud Atlas (Blu-ray/DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy Combo Pack)

Cloud Atlas (Blu-ray/DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy Combo Pack) Overview

Future. Present. Past. Everything is connected. An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution. The story is a time-shifting weave of six interlinking narratives, with diverse settings from the savagery of a Pacific Island in the 1850s to a dystopian Korea of the near future. Based on the New York Times best-selling novel "Cloud Atlas" written by David Mitchell.

Cloud Atlas (Blu-ray/DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy Combo Pack) Specifications

You've got to give it up for a movie that goes the big-canvas route and then some: Cloud Atlas is a mega-project, a star-studded near-three-hour opus that reaches for deep metaphysical meaning. And instead of one story, the movie adapted from David Mitchell's novel features six interlocking narratives, ranging from a 19th-century seafaring yarn to a pair of futuristic dystopias (one high-tech, the other a postapocalyptic return to barbarism). To emphasize the themes of eternal recurrence and transmigrating souls, the hard-working actors play multiple roles across these timelines, so you get to see Tom Hanks and Halle Berry et al. ensconced in a variety of makeup and prosthetics. This includes casting across gender and race, which means if you've ever wondered how Hugo Weaving would look as a tough female nurse, or Jim Sturgess as an Asian action hero, this is your chance. (Coming across best are a sprightly Jim Broadbent, a mournful Ben Whishaw, and a genuinely haunting Doona Bae.) This tapestry is so large it required three directors: Andy and Lana Wachowski, and Tom Tykwer, who applied all their talent to a project that, the more it goes on, begins to resemble a kind of glossy New Age seminar complete with chase scenes. Cloud Atlas is often fun to watch just for the sheer ambition of it, in the way you'd watch a circus act full of dangerous stunts… but nonsense dressed in highfalutin clothes is still nonsense, and in the end the approach feels more than a little silly. --Robert Horton

On the verge of having their conspiracy exposed, members of the government's intelligence community will stop at nothing to erase all evidence of their top secret programs - even the agents involved. Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) must use his genetically-engineered skills to survive the ultimate game of cat-and-mouse and finish what Jason Bourne started. Also starring Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz and Academy Award nominee Edward Norton, critics are calling this a "thrilling, edge-of-your-seat heart-pounder" (Meg Porter Berns, WSVN-TV (FOX), Miami).

The Bourne Legacy (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) Specifications

Sort of a sequel, not quite a reboot--The Bourne Legacy is not easy to peg as a follow-up to the original Matt Damon trilogy. Except for this: it's a heckuva satisfying spy picture, an ingenious expansion on the Bourne universe that also meets the expectations of a multiplex title circa 2012. (Plenty of action to go with the espionage talk, in other words.) Jeremy Renner takes center stage as Aaron Cross, an agent groomed by the government program that also unleashed Jason Bourne, but with a few new wrinkles. Cross is busy training in Alaska when he's caught in a tsunami of hurt, thus beginning a frantic search for answers that leads to a mad motorcycle chase through the streets of Manila. He picks up a partner in government doctor Marta Shearing, who is mighty confused herself after nearly being caught in a madman's bloody rampage. She's played by Rachel Weisz; like Renner, she lifts her character above the usual genre expectations. Kudos to writer-director Tony Gilroy, who scripted the other Bourne installments--he brings his knack for crafting intelligent, complicated stories and zingy dialogue to good use, while simultaneously announcing himself as a potential James Bond director. Two caveats: the movie's timeline makes it slightly confusing to sort things out with the ending of The Bourne Ultimatum--at least on first viewing--and the ending itself sneaks up on us a little abruptly. But the movie's a humdinger anyway: not exactly Bourne again, but something distinct to itself. --Robert Horton

Oblivion (Two-Disc Combo Pack: Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Oblivion (Two-Disc Combo Pack: Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) Overview

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the visionary director of Tron: Legacy and producers of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Oblivion (Two-Disc Combo Pack: Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) Specifications

The contrast between stunning blue-hued technology and the moldering remnants of an Earth that has been decimated by environmental catastrophe and weapons of absolute destruction is kind of a neat parallel to the twisty story that makes Oblivion such a fun, albeit decidedly bleak Tom Cruise sci-fi crowd pleaser. Cruise is Jack Harper, a futuristic maverick who patrols the wasteland of our planet in 2077, 60 years after an alien invasion by the "scavs" left it a dying cinder. His girlfriend/partner Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) whispers directives in his ear from their iPad-like headquarters in the clouds, getting her orders from a video-only spectral overlord named Sally (Melissa Leo), who oozes not-quite-right with every politely southern-drawled command. Jack's job is to zip around repairing security drones and keep safe from scav attacks the enormous fusion converters that are sucking Earth's last ocean resources dry for the surviving humans who now populate Saturn's moon Titan. Very soon Jack and Victoria will be departing to the massive hovering mothership for their escape to Titan and a life of love and leisure. But something's not quite right in Jack's perception of things, in spite of the "security memory wipe" both he and Victoria live with. He can't shake persistent dreams of a thriving New York City, a place he experiences in reality only as crumbling canyons marked by the ground-level spire of the Empire State Building. There are other troubling signs as Jack whizzes through dangerous atmospheres and landscapes in a snazzy bubble-shaped spacecraft or rides a streamlined motorbike that's the perfect accessory for his sleek leather suit and ergonomic armaments. He thinks the scavs are trying to capture, not kill him, plus he's spending more and more secret time shooting hoops and listening to Led Zeppelin at a bucolic lakeside log cabin where Victoria can't track him. Oblivion takes its time with this absorbing mood-setting background of visually ravishing tableaux. At the halfway mark, it starts throwing around wild twists and turns after Jack investigates the crash landing of a spaceship from Earth's past. From it he rescues the woman of his dreams (Olga Kurylenko), which is the breaking point for his already almost-blown mind. The sinister vibe that has been a background rumble throughout quickly gains volume. An appearance by Morgan Freeman in cool-cat shades and a black cape gives the extra complexity some real class. It's a bit of a paradox that the script has such bold insights, yet is also so brashly derivative. The stylistic flourishes and elegant conceptual designs are singular in their vision, but there are direct references and plot cues taken from dozens of other movies, including WALL-E, The Matrix, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, Moon, and Total Recall. It's not too hard to see where the threads lead, but flying along as Oblivion ties them together is a trip of its very own. --Ted Fry

Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Overview

Studio: Hbo Home Video Release Date: 01/08/2013 Run time: 561 minutes Rating: Nr

Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Specifications

Game of Thrones, the first book in author George R.R. Martin's sprawling fantasy saga A Song of Fire and Ice, serves as the basis for this brawny, lusty series about courtly intrigue and civil war in a sprawling fantasy kingdom. TV and fantasy veteran Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings, Sharpe's Rifles) leads the massive cast as the warrior-noble Eddard Stark, who reluctantly assumes the role as the Hand of the King after the mysterious death of his predecessor. The King, Robert Baratheon, has leadership of the lands of Westeros, a mythical country plagued by severe, decade-long shifts in weather. His rule is challenged by the exiled Prince Viserys Targaryen (Harry Lloyd), who trades his own sister (Emilia Clarke) for the allegiance of the Dothraki, a savage nomadic tribe led by Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa of the 2011 Conan the Barbarian). A shocking secret kept hidden by Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey, 300) leads to an upset in the balance of power and, ultimately, a challenge to the House of Stark to bring control to the bloodshed that threatens to overtake Westeros.

Fantasy has been a tricky genre for television--the scope required to bring the sweep and imagination to life is usually better suited for the big screen. But Game of Thrones neatly sidesteps the issue by virtue of the quality of the production at every level. Though the series is steeped in fantastic elements, from direwolves to dragons, series creators David Benioff (who wrote Troy and The Kite Runner, among others) and author D.B. Weiss (Lucky Wander Boy) have rooted the drama in the emotional landscape of its characters, which brings the end result closer to Benioff's humorous description of the show as "The Sopranos in Middle-Earth." Intricate plotting and direction with an eye for realism by a host of HBO veterans, including Tim Van Patten, Alan Taylor, and Daniel Minahan, underscores that notion, as does its stellar cast, which includes Mark Addy as Headey's husband, King Robert, Iain Glen as the faithful knight Ser Jorah Mormont, and Aiden Gillen (The Wire) as Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish. However, the proceedings are handily won by Peter Dinklage's Emmy-nominated turn as the cunning Tyrion, whose intellect is constantly disregarded due to his size. Of course, viewers can also tune in to simply enjoy the more visceral elements of Game of Thrones, which features quite a bit of medieval-style carnage, as well as an at-times unnecessary level of nudity, which feels like a network decision based on the amount of flesh on display in their other successful shows. Regardless, Game of Thrones is an entirely addictive experience for both fantasy and drama fans alike throughout its debut 10 episodes, all of which are featured on this multi-disc set. --Paul Gaita

Singin' In The Rain: 60th Anniversary Collector's Edition (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Singin' In The Rain: 60th Anniversary Collector's Edition (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Overview

America’s beloved musical gem, starring Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor, celebrates its 60th Anniversary on Blu-ray for the very first time with an all new 3-Disc Blu-ray & DVD Ultimate Collector’s Edition. The sensational limited and numbered 3-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition will feature the film both on Blu-ray and DVD, and includes an all new hi-definition documentary, and special collectible memorabilia.

Singin' In The Rain: 60th Anniversary Collector's Edition (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Specifications

Decades before the Hollywood film industry became famous for megabudget disaster and science fiction spectaculars, the studios of Southern California (and particularly Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) were renowned for a uniquely American (and nearly extinct) kind of picture known as The Musical. Indeed, when the prestigious British film magazine Sight & Sound conducts its international critics poll in the second year of every decade, this 1952 MGM picture is the American musical that consistently ranks among the 10 best movies ever made. It's not only a great song-and-dance piece starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and a sprightly Debbie Reynolds; it's also an affectionately funny insider spoof about the film industry's uneasy transition from silent pictures to "talkies." Kelly plays debonair star Don Lockwood, whose leading lady Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) has a screechy voice hilariously ill-suited to the new technology (and her glamorous screen image). Among the musical highlights: O'Connor's knockout "Make 'Em Laugh"; the big "Broadway Melody" production number; and, best of all, that charming little title ditty in which Kelly makes movie magic on a drenched set with nothing but a few puddles, a lamppost, and an umbrella. --Jim Emerson

Jurassic Park (3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Jurassic Park (3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) Overview

Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 04/23/2013 Rating: Pg13

Jurassic Park (3D Blu-ray + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) Specifications

Steven Spielberg's 1993 mega-hit rivals Jaws as the most intense and frightening film he'd ever made prior to Schindler's List, but it was also among his weakest stories. Based on Michael Crichton's novel about an island amusement park populated by cloned dinosaurs, the film works best as a thrill ride with none of the interesting human dynamics of Spielberg's Jaws. That lapse proves unfortunate, but there's no shortage of raw terror as a rampaging T-rex and nasty raptors try to make fast food out of the cast. The effects are still astonishing (despite the fact that the computer-generated technology has since been improved upon) and at times primeval, such as the sight of a herd of whatever-they-are scampering through a valley. --Tom Keogh

The Guilt Trip (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

The Guilt Trip (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Overview

Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen are the perfect comedy duo""* as they embark on one mother of a road trip! The plan for a quick stop at Mom's takes a sudden turn when an impulse compels Andy (Seth Rogen) to invite his mother, Joyce (Barbra Streisand), on an 8-day, 3,000 mile, journey across the country. But the farther they go, the closer they get and Andy may realize that they have more in common than he ever imagined.

The Guilt Trip (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Specifications

After making his reputation as a performer of R-rated material, Seth Rogen seems an unlikely match for Barbra Streisand, iconic star of stage and screen, but The Guilt Trip works more often than not. Rogen plays Andy, an organic chemist who has poured his life savings into a nontoxic cleaning solution. While in New Jersey to make a pitch for Scieoclean--a name no one can pronounce--he pays a visit to his mother, Joyce (Streisand), who has plenty of friends, but gave up on romance when his father died (similarly, Andy threw in the towel when his first love fizzled out). In an unguarded moment, she tells her son that she named him after a college sweetheart, which makes such an impression that he invites her to accompany him across the country as he attempts to find a buyer for Scieoclean. Little does she know that Andy plans to set up a meeting with her and her old boyfriend in San Francisco, where he hopes she can put her unresolved feelings to rest, leading to a road-trip comedy in which the characters generate a combination of prickly humor and touching moments as they laugh, bicker, meet an attractive admirer, and learn to see each other as fully fledged human beings. Though Colin Hanks and Adam Scott appear briefly, The Proposal's Anne Fletcher relies primarily on her leads, who acquit themselves nicely. If The Guilt Trip never cuts as deeply as it could, it offers a pleasant enough ride. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Jack the Giant Slayer (Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy Combo Pack)

Jack the Giant Slayer (Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy Combo Pack) Overview

Jack the Giant Slayer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Jack the Giant Slayer (Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy Combo Pack) Specifications

The traditional fairy tale has been folded and spindled by Hollywood so often that it can be hard to remember what made the stories so beloved in the first place. (When writing the originals back in the 19th century, the Brothers Grimm tended to shy away from American Idol jokes.) Thankfully, the megabudgeted Jack the Giant Slayer chooses to find its wit and humor within the myth, rather than awkwardly shoehorning in pop culture references. While some of the action may be a bit too splattery for younger kids, the majority of viewers should find it as difficult to resist as… well, a good bedtime story. Director Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects) and his writers keep the basic beats of the tale intact: farm boy Jack (Nicholas Hoult) gets magic seeds, climbs resulting beanstalk (a truly special effect that looks exactly like you'd think it should), rescues princess (Eleanor Tomlinson) from angry big dudes. Meanwhile, the additions that are made to flesh out the narrative--most notably Ewan McGregor as a cocky Han Soloish knight--enhance rather than detract from the overall dreamy pull. As for the giants, they're a winningly gross bunch, with exaggerated characteristics that recall both ancient woodcuts and Mad magazine. (Props to Bill Nighy and John Kassir, whose vocal talents combine to make a fantastically weird head bad guy.) Singer and company can't entirely escape the modern blockbuster bloat, and Jack's final act does admittedly teeter on the verge of too-muchness, with a battle sequence that calls down the ear-punishing thunder and threatens to dissolve into a CGI blur. The story's basic charm ultimately wins out, however, thanks to the filmmakers always keeping in mind the value of a good tale well told. Squareness can be a virtue, sometimes. --Andrew Wright
