Monsters vs. Aliens [Blu-ray]

Monsters vs. Aliens [Blu-ray] Overview

When Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon) is unexpectedly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall and is instantly labeled a “Monster” named Ginormica.  The military jumps into action, and she is captured by General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland) and held in a secret government compound filled with other “monsters” like herself. This ragtag group consists of the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach P.H.D. (Hugh Laurie); the macho half-ape-half-fish The Missing Link (Will Arnett); the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B. (Seth Rogen); and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus.  Their confinement time is cut short however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to save the world from imminent destruction.

B.O.B.’S BIG BREAK
B.O.B. (Seth Rogen) and his monstrous crew are on a mission to bust out of Area 52, the government’s top-secret holding cell.  Led by mad-scientist Dr. Cockroach P.H.D. (Hugh Laurie) and macho amphibian The Missing Link (Will Arnett), the trio outwits grizzled General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland) to make a triumphant escape…almost.

Mozart - Die Zauberflote [Blu-ray]

Mozart - Die Zauberflote [Blu-ray] Overview

MOZART:DIE ZAUBERFLOTE - Blu-Ray Movie

Mozart - Die Zauberflote [Blu-ray] Specifications

It’s hard to find a version of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte that’s as well sung as this 2003 Covent Garden production. Led by the eminent Mozartian, Sir Colin Davis, orchestra and singers present a warm, often intense vision of the opera, not as the fairy tale it’s often taken for, but as a human drama of the passage from misguided beliefs to mature knowledge of self. Diana Damrau is the Queen of the Night for our time, with show-stopping bravura singing that tosses off the score’s terrifying high notes with almost casual abandon. Her acting and her fright outfit never leave you in doubt that she’s the evil presence here, even when she’s pretending to be a good mom concerned about her daughter, Pamina. Dorothea Röschmann is superb, floating pianissimo notes to die for and singing with a beautifully rounded soprano allied to a dramatic sense that make her Ach, ich fuhl's so moving. Will Hartman is a virile Tamino, a bit heavier of voice than most of the lyric tenors who take the role, but singing well. Like most Tamino’s, he’s upstaged by Papageno, the bird-catcher who’s his sidekick. Baritone Simon Keenlyside offers the best-sung Papageno one could hope to hear, and while he’s funny in many of his more physical scenes, he replaces the usual clownish buffoon with an earth-bound Everyman. The noble Sarastro, the lovers’ guide to self-realization, is well sung by Franz-Josef Selig, whose ample bass easily encompasses the low Fs that make most basses sound strained.

The smaller roles are done well, too. Ailish Tynan has a romp as Papagena; the evil Monostatos is done to vocal and acting perfection by Adrian Thompson, the Queen’s Three Ladies are well-matched and appropriately edgy, and the Temple Priests are convincingly sung and acted. This production of Die Zauberflöte is a dark one. Producer David McVicar and conductor Davis reject the relatively recent transformation of the opera into a Disney-like romp for kids. The comic element in the opera is there, but its philosophical underpinnings--humanity’s fitful progress to a higher plane – are paramount. There are still plenty of laughs with the fake dragon that pursues Tamino at the opera’s opening and Papageno’s funny business with a bird, among other chuckle-inducing scenes. But the production’s Stygian backgrounds make for an oppressive setting. When light enters, as in the pomp of Sarastro’s entry or the blazing yellow disc of the sun that conquers darkness, the opera’s meanings are crystal-clear. Most of the characters wear 18th Century outfits, to comic effect as Monostatos’ heavy makeup, lipsticked mouth, and elaborate wig. But there are occasional incongruities: Tamino’s smock, the Three Boys’ knit sweaters and short pants, and Papagana’s mangy fur coat, among others. They’re well intregrated into the staging so they don’t jar. Nor, aside from the occasional too-tight closeups, does the video direction. In the special features, Davis speaks of the opera’s tension between "lighthearted music and the seriousness of the story," and all elements of this production fuse those key aspects in a way that makes this Blu-ray disc a joy to hear and watch. --Dan Davis

Entrapment [Blu-ray]

Entrapment [Blu-ray] Overview

When a priceless Rembrandt is stolen in New York, the evidence points to a solitary master thief (Connery), who is about to meet the insurance company's most cunning - and seductive - investigator (Zeta-Jones). Following a nerve-racking game of cat and mouse, the two join forces, or so it seems, to attempt a daring multibillion-dollar heist tied to the dawn of the new millennium.

Entrapment [Blu-ray] Specifications

Sean Connery plays a master thief thought to be long retired, while Katherine Zeta-Jones is his foil, a hotshot insurance investigator assigned to his case. They both have a little something to hold over each other's heads, until it turns out that Zeta-Jones is a professional art thief herself and is playing on both sides of the fence. At first they eye each other with mutual distrust until they team up for a job, which goes off without a hitch. Inevitably their prickly relationship begins to thaw somewhat, and the two become attracted to each other as they plan out the massive Y2K bank scam that is the movie's climax (complete with sequel-ready ending). Entrapment plays somewhat like a '70s caper movie revamped for the gadget-happy high-tech '90s. The plot takes a few too many labored twists and turns, and the chemistry between the two leads is nearly nonexistent, though both carry on gamely in their parts. On the other hand, there is some genuine suspense in many scenes as they go about their business, dripping with whiz-bang burglary devices. Zeta-Jones, of course, is drop-dead gorgeous, and Connery is as reliable as always in his role. The fairly flat editing and direction tends to drag the film down somewhat, but fans of caper movies, high-tech thrillers, and the two leads should find plenty to like in this film. --Jerry Renshaw

Dr. Strangelove [Blu-ray]

Dr. Strangelove [Blu-ray] Overview

Blu-ray release on the title's 45th Anniversary comes loaded with extras! Bonus material includes a new documentary (No Fighting In The War Room), a new featurette (Best Sellers or: Peter Sellers and Dr. Strangelove) and an interview with former Defense secretary Robert McNamara.

For the first time ever on stunning Blu-ray High Def, Dr. Strangelove 45th Anniversary Edition book package includes a 32-page graphic booklet. New added value content includes “The Cold Facts” and Picture-in-Graphics/Picture-in-Picture track.

Dr. Strangelove [Blu-ray] Specifications

Arguably the greatest black comedy ever made, Stanley Kubrick's cold war classic is the ultimate satire of the nuclear age. Dr. Strangelove is a perfect spoof of political and military insanity, beginning when General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), a maniacal warrior obsessed with "the purity of precious bodily fluids," mounts his singular campaign against Communism by ordering a squadron of B-52 bombers to attack the Soviet Union. The Soviets counter the threat with a so-called "Doomsday Device," and the world hangs in the balance while the U.S. president (Peter Sellers) engages in hilarious hot-line negotiations with his Soviet counterpart. Sellers also plays a British military attaché and the mad bomb-maker Dr. Strangelove; George C. Scott is outrageously frantic as General Buck Turgidson, whose presidential advice consists mainly of panic and statistics about "acceptable losses." With dialogue ("You can't fight here! This is the war room!") and images (Slim Pickens's character riding the bomb to oblivion) that have become a part of our cultural vocabulary, Kubrick's film regularly appears on critics' lists of the all-time best. --Jeff Shannon

Not the Messiah: He's a Very Naughty Boy [Blu-ray]

Not the Messiah: He's a Very Naughty Boy [Blu-ray] Overview

NOT THE MESSIAH - Blu-Ray Movie

Not the Messiah: He's a Very Naughty Boy [Blu-ray] Specifications

Something completely different is all well and good, but for Monty Python fans, there are few greater joys than hearing even for the umpteenth time a rousing live rendition of the troupe's adopted theme, "The Liberty Bell" march, or singing along to a bagpipes-enhanced "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" and "The Lumberjack Song." These pleasures frame Eric Idle and John Du Prez's 2007 comic "baroque and roll" oratorio inspired by Monty Python's Life of Brian. "Chaos and Confusion" (from the opening movement of the same name) reign in the first quarter hour, but things pick up once the hapless Brian Cohen (William Ferguson) enters the picture. For the uninitiated: "He's not the chosen one / Not the hero of his race / He's just a wrong man at the wrong time in the wrong place." The oratorio's best bits are lifted from the film, particularly "What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us," "The People's Front of Judea," and "Individuals," in which Brian tries to persuade his eager would-be followers that he is not the Messiah. Some of the jokes are inspired ("Is it A.D. yet?" "About a quarter to"). Others are nudge-nudge, say-no-more groan-worthy ("She was great with child / And not too bad without"). Not the Messiah is an easy-to-Handel mad mash-up of musical styles, including gospel, Gilbert & Sullivan, doo-wop, and Bob Dylan. In their fleeting bits, fellow Pythons Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam (as well as the ever-ravishing Carol Cleveland) are given rock star welcomes. This lavish 2009 live performance at London's venerable Royal Albert Hall commemorating Python's 40th anniversary, and featuring the not-at-all-shabby BBC Symphony and Chorus, may not have the kick or star power of Spamalot, but it is funny enough, at times lovely enough, and above all, silly enough to take its rightful place at the Python Round Table. --Donald Liebenson

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Blu-Ray) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

A View from Space With Heavenly Music [Blu-ray] Overview

Eight hours of music all on one Blu-Ray High Definition disc, . . . the greatest classical music ever recorded, in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, provides the heavenly soundtrack to this spectacular view of our planet captured in stunning High Definition clarity by the international crew of the space shuttle Endeavour. The Earth, as never seen before, accompanied by the timeless music of Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Pachelbel, Strauss, Grieg, Bizet, Debussy, Rossini and more.

A View from Space With Heavenly Music [Blu-ray] Specifications

If you want to show off your new widescreen HDTV for party guests, A View from Space with Heavenly Music will do the job just fine. While this one-hour program's high-definition images from low Earth orbit are certainly impressive, it's the "heavenly music" that is emphasized here, with eight different soundtracks to choose from, consisting of excerpts from nearly every classical composition in the popular canon. You have your choice of a public-domain "greatest hits" mix of great composers (on soundtracks 1, 3, and 7) while Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach, and Tchaikovsky are all given exclusive showcases on the remaining five tracks. This variety of listening options provides satisfying compensation for the high-def footage, filmed from low Earth orbit by astronauts aboard the space shuttle Endeavor. It's amazing footage (despite occasional smudges, dirt flecks, and other anomalies caused by shooting through the shuttle's windows), offering viewers the next best thing to actually flying on the shuttle. Stunning vistas pass below, with vivid coastlines, filigrees of cloud cover, and bodies of water reflecting sunlight with breathtaking clarity. In addition to the spectacular opening sequence (a single, unbroken shot of the shuttle from launch to troposphere), the images serve as a colorful, dynamic reminder of the Earth's delicate beauty. Unfortunately, the DVD offers these impressive sights and sounds but nothing else, so A View from Space qualifies at least partially as a missed opportunity. The images eventually grow redundant as we return, orbit by orbit, to the same locations, and there's no bonus features or onscreen options to inform us about what exactly we're seeing. That makes this the HD equivalent of Muzak--soothing and pleasant, but that's about it. It's basically a classical music disc with space footage as a bonus, and if you expect nothing more, it's guaranteed to please. --Jeff Shannon

Herbert von Karajan: Memorial Concert [Blu-ray]

Herbert von Karajan: Memorial Concert [Blu-ray] Overview

A triumph of remembrance, wrote Die Welt following this stirring concert given by
the Berliner Philharmoniker under Seiji Ozawa and with Anne-Sophie Mutter as
soloist. It left its audience hovering between hushed reverence and deafening
exultation. The Golden Hall of Vienna's Musikverein was the dazzling venue for the
live recording of this concert celebrating the 100th birthday of Herbert von Karajan.
And there Karajan s Berliner never sounded better, evoking a time which selfconfidently
sought the private and subjective in music, and believed it could find
them in the mirror of the works (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). It is a concert
that commemorates Herbert von Karajan for the ages in a supremely moving manner.

  • FIRE & ICE

Fire and Ice [Blu-ray] Overview

From The Director Of The Original Animated THE LORD OF THE RINGS And The Illustrator Of CONAN THE BARBARIAN

It began as a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two of the greatest icons of the fantasy genre: Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi (director of FRITZ THE CAT, WIZARDS and the original THE LORD OF THE RINGS) and legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta (creator of the iconic CONAN THE BARBARIAN, VAMPIRELLA and Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers). It became - and remains - one of the most startling animation epics of all time. Now experience a world unlike any ever seen, where savage warriors, horrific monsters and luscious maidens battle for the soul of a civilization in a time of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and FIRE AND ICE.

This long-unavailable cult favorite has been fully restored and remastered in breathtaking High Definition from original vault materials, remixed in earth-shaking 7.1 DTS-HD and 7.1 Dolby TrueHD, and loaded with exciting Extras.

EXTRAS:
Audio Commentary with Producer/Director Ralph Bakshi
"The Making of FIRE AND ICE"
"Bakshi on Frazetta"
"Sean Hannon's Diary Notes"
Behind-the-Scenes Photo Gallery
Theatrical Trailer
Enhanced for D-Box Motion Control Systems

Fire and Ice [Blu-ray] Specifications

The mighty-muscled heroes and big-bottomed babes of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta inspired animator Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Wizards) to create the swords-and-sorcery epic Fire and Ice. Bakshi uses a technique called rotoscoping, which uses live-action film of actors as the template for animation, allowing him to put realistic action into fantastic environments. The verisimilitude of movement in a cartoon can be startling, but that's about all Fire and Ice has to offer; the wafer-thin story, overwrought characters, and clumsy dialogue are vapid cliches. Of much greater interest are the extras in this two-disc set, including a making-of feature that demonstrates the painstaking process of rotoscoping; enthusiastic commentary from Bakshi, who's a jovial, down-to-earth guy with a thick Brooklyn accent; deliriously fatuous diary notes from one of the actors; and a feature-length documentary called Frazetta: Painting with Fire, which reveals the artist to be more intriguing than any of the barbarians he's famous for. The effusive praise of other fantasy artists and "Frazetta historians" occasionally veers into Spinal Tap territory, but it's fascinating watching Frazetta turn from a 1950s James-Dean-style tough guy into the king of fantasy art. Though his work is often dismissed as adolescent kitsch, the documentary persuasively argues that Frazetta deservedly dominates his corner of the art world. --Bret Fetzer

Paper Heart [Blu-ray]

Paper Heart [Blu-ray] Overview

Charlyne Yi does not believe in love. Or so she says. Well, at the very least, she doesn’t believe in fairy-tale love or the Hollywood mythology of love, and her own experiences have turned her into yet another modern-day skeptic.

Follow Charlyne across America as she and her good friend (and director) Nicholas Jasenovec search for answers and advice about love, by talking with friends and strangers, scientists, bikers, romance novelists, and children. They each offer diverse views on modern romance, as well as various answers to the age-old question: does true love really exist? Charlyne’s pursuit to discover the nature of love takes on a fresh new urgency when she meets a boy after her own heart: Michael Cera. As their relationship develops on camera, her pursuit risks losing the person she finds closest to her heart.

Combining elements of documentary and traditional storytelling, reality and fantasy, Paper Heart brings a fresh perspective to the modern romance and redefines the classic love story.

Paper Heart [Blu-ray] Specifications

A creatively self-conscious comedy that is part real documentary and part, well, something else, Paper Heart begins as an inquiry by artist and comedian Charlyne Yi into the nature of love. Working closely with pal and director Nicholas Jasenovec, Yi travels the U.S. looking for anyone who will talk to her about their experiences with or perspectives about love. Along the way, she meets some wonderful people, including older folks, children, and even a celebrity (Seth Rogen) or two. But nothing shakes Yi's skepticism that there is such a thing as permanent, romantic love until actor Michael Cera (Juno) stumbles into her on-camera life. Shy but curious about one another, Cera and Yi cautiously hook up, troubled by the omnipresence of Jasenovec and his crew but unable to get free of Yi's agreement to allow everything to be filmed. The very pressure under which they try to make their simmering relationship work becomes the test Yi needs to believe that love is real--or, at least, cleverly scripted. It's hard to know exactly where the line is between documentary and fiction in this film, but in a way it doesn't matter. A point or two is made, and the audience gets to enjoy Yi's cardboard-cutout puppetry.

Elvis Presley and vivacious Ann-Margret sizzle in this dazzling funfest that's brimming with high-voltage musical numbers, roaring race cars and glittery Vegas action. Year: 1963

Viva Las Vegas [Blu-ray] Specifications

It's pretty tough to beat Jailhouse Rock in terms of sheer entertainment, but Elvis lovers are particularly fond of this 1964 hit. The Big E plays race-car driver Lucky Jackson, who arrives in Las Vegas for an upcoming Grand Prix race. Lucky's car needs a new engine, so he gets a waiter job at a casino and starts working his crooning charms on Rusty Martin (Ann-Margret). It's their on-screen chemistry that makes this flick a lot of fun; Presley never had a better costar than Ann-Margret, and their race-car romance is quintessential 1960s fluff. Then there are the songs, of course, including the snappy title tune, a rockin' rendition of Ray Charles's "What'd I Say?," and "The Yellow Rose of Texas." Viva Las Vegas is one of the Elvis movies that stands the test of time, when the legend was still at his peak. And if you're wondering if the King gets his car fixed in time to win the race, well, check out the movie to find out. --Jeff Shannon

The Man In The Iron Mask (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Overview

MAN IN THE IRON MASK - Blu-Ray Movie

The Man In The Iron Mask (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Specifications

Footnotes in movie books are likely to reduce this swashbuckling adventure down to a simple description: it was the first movie to star Leonardo DiCaprio after the phenomenal success of Titanic. As such it automatically attracted a box-office stampede of Leo's young female fans, but critical reaction was deservedly mixed. Having earned his directorial debut after writing the Oscar-winning script for Mel Gibson's Braveheart, Randall Wallace wrote and directed this ambitious version of the often-filmed classic novel by Alexandre Dumas. DiCaprio plays dual roles as the despotic King Louis XIV, who rules France with an iron fist, and the king's twin brother, Philippe, who languishes in prison under an iron mask, his identity concealed to prevent an overthrow of Louis' throne. But Louis' abuse of power ultimately enrages Athos (John Malkovich), one of the original Four Musketeers, who recruits his former partners (Gabriel Byrne, GĂ©rard Depardieu, and Jeremy Irons) in a plot to liberate Philippe and install him as the king's identical replacement. Once this plot is set in motion and the Musketeers are each given moments in the spotlight, the film kicks into gear and offers plenty of entertainment in the grand style of vintage swashbucklers. But it's also sidetracked by excessive length and disposable subplots, and for all his post-Titanic star power, the boyish DiCaprio just isn't yet "man" enough to be fully convincing in his title role. Still, this is an entertaining movie, no less enjoyable for falling short of the greatness to which it aspired. --Jeff Shannon

Eragon [Blu-ray] Specifications

While it owes much of its appeal and appearance to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Eragon can stand on its own as an enjoyable fantasy for younger viewers. Faithfully adapted from the bestselling novel by teenage author Christopher Paolini, this boy-and-his-dragon tale offers clean, fast-paced family entertainment without compromising the darker qualities of Paolini's novel (the first in what is known as the "Inheritance" trilogy). The plot centers on 17-year-old peasant farmboy Eragon (played by appealing newcomer Ed Speleers) who discovers a mysterious blue object that turns out to be an egg that eventually hatches to reveal Saphira, a blue-scaled dragon that quickly grows to full-size. According to prophecy, Eragon is destined to be a dragon-rider like those who once protected a benevolent kingdom, thus reviving an ancient conflict against the army of King Galbatorix (John Malkovich), a former dragon rider who turned to evil, now in alliance with a! dark-magic "Shade" sorcerer named Durza (Robert Carlyle). While the movie serves up familiar fantasy elements and offers little if anything new to fans of the genre (or anyone who's read the books of Anne McCaffrey and Ursula K. Le Guin), it's visually impressive (especially the dragon scenes, with Rachel Weisz providing the telepathic "voice" of Saphira) and full of timeless wisdom, much of it delivered by Eragon's heroic mentor Brom (Jeremy Irons), himself a former dragon rider with memories of past battles and hope for Eragon's future. Add a fair warrior-maiden named Arya (Sienna Guillory) and you've got all the ingredients for a worthwhile (if not particularly original) fantasy that points directly to a sequel. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to individual viewers to decide. --Jeff Shannon
