Black Lagoon: Complete Set - Season 1 & 2 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Black Lagoon: Complete Set - Season 1 & 2 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Overview

Rokuro's mundane trip to South East Asia turns from pleasure cruise to festival of pain when modern-day pirates take him hostage. Revy, Dutch, and Benny are the ruthless crew of the Black Lagoon. For them, getting shot at while smuggling drugs, guns, and stolen goods is part of a typical day at work - and Rokuro is joining the team.

Black Lagoon: Complete Set - Season 1 & 2 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Specifications

The action-adventure series Black Lagoon (2006) shoots off more ammunition than a Clint Eastwood film festival. Rokura Okajima, a minor flunky in a major corporation, thinks his life is over when he's kidnapped by pirates, but it's only his business career that ends. He joins the pirates as "Rock," and the trio of Dutch, the understated leader; happy-go-lucky techie Benny; and trigger-happy, potty-mouthed Revy becomes a quartet. They're less pirates than soldiers of fortune, ready to do anything if the price is right. They pursue adventures involving treasure left on a sunken World War II U-boat, pornographers, drug- and arms-dealing nuns, kidnappers, and a terrorist plot to blow up US embassies. The second season of Black Lagoon ratchets up the action and the violence, as two sadistic assassins throw the underworld into an uproar: a pair of Romanian orphans who developed a taste for cruelty performing in snuff films. But most of the Second Barrage focuses on Rock serving as a translator when Russian crime boss Lady Balalaika intervenes in a yakuza gang war in Tokyo. Revy serves as his bodyguard, leaving Benny and Dutch behind. Rock falls for Yukio, a high school girl who succeeds her father as head of the Washimine crime syndicate. When Lady Balalaika comments, "We're all going to be knee-deep in blood before this ends," she isn't kidding. The Russian gangsters, who command more men, vehicles, and weapons than many national armies, quickly exterminate most of the Washimine gang. Amid the carnage, Yukio complains bitterly (and seriously), "Honor and justice are dead." Although bullets, blood, and four-letter words fly, it doesn't add up to much. The gun battles, car chases, knife fights, and explosions take up so much screen time, there's little left for character development or a coherent narrative. Extremely violent, misogynistic, and profane, Black Lagoon is not for squeamish or easily offended viewers. (Rated TV MA: graphic violence, violence against women, extensive profanity, grotesque imagery, alcohol and tobacco use, racial slurs, offensive ethnic stereotypes, Nazi imagery, offensive religious imagery, references to child pornography, suggested incest and torture) --Charles Solomon

The Newsroom: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

The Newsroom: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Overview

HBO presents the new one-hour drama series from the fertile mind of Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) and executive produced by Sorkin, Scott Rudin and Alan Poul. Smart, topical, humorous and highly entertaining, The Newsroom takes a behind-the-scenes look at a high-rated cable-news program at the fictional ACN Network, focusing on the on- and off-camera lives of its acerbic anchor (Jeff Daniels), new executive producer (Emily Mortimer), their newsroom staff (John Gallagher, Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Olivia Munn, Dev Patel and others) and their news-division boss (Sam Waterston). Overcoming a tumultuous first day together – climaxing in a newsflash that a BP oil rig has just exploded in the Gulf of Mexico – the team sets out on a patriotic if quixotic mission to “do the news well” in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles, and their own personal entanglements.

The Newsroom: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Specifications

The Newsroom has caused as much conversation about creative and cultural tunnel vision as the HBO series' creator sparks himself. Aaron Sorkin was the brains behind TV's The West Wing, Sports Night, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip as well as screenwriter of The Social Network, Moneyball (with Steven Zaillian), and A Few Good Men (based on his play), among others. Wielding a sort of totalitarian imprimatur that marks everything he does, Sorkin is the subject of much adoration and derision, both of which have been heaped on a show with a distinctive voice that can be as long-winded, blustery, and full of idealistic intellect as most of its characters. The Newsroom is set in a sprawling simulacrum of the nerve center for a fictional 24-hour cable news network, with only a few segues into the boardrooms, bars, and apartments. The prime-time anchor is Will McAvoy, a vaguely Republican veteran reporter whose crisis of faith in the media and dedication to the fundamentals of journalism causes a meltdown in the premiere episode. Before he knows it, he's launched into a public diatribe about how America isn't number one, an event that ultimately drives him to form a new path for his show. Helping him craft a purer angle that's poised to cut through the noise, mundanity, and ennui in TV news is a new production team headed by producer MacKenzie McHale. She's an ex-lover who jilted Will, but who also happens to be a firebrand of passion, integrity, and battle-scarred honor. Jeff Daniels and Emily Mortimer as Will and MacKenzie carry much of the weight with their inherently personal skirmishes (hard feelings linger) and the speechifying that makes up most of the dialogue, usually dialed up to 10 in speed and volume. Will's arrogance is slightly tempered by MacKenzie's uprightness, but both of them represent clear archetypes in Sorkin's quest to carry his message through the medium. MacKenzie says her imperative is "speaking truth to stupid," which pretty well sums up Sorkin's attitude about the show's mission as well as his intention for his audience. The stridency flows from the top down, but the large cast includes plenty of other mouthpieces for the editorializing. All the politics and realistic newsiness is countered by the very public personal lives of the newsroom staff. Thomas Sadoski and John Gallagher Jr. play pit-bull producers with disdain for each other and a mutual attraction to Maggie (Alison Pill), an associate producer who plays ditzy and quick-witted at the same time. Dev Patel is a quietly likable presence on the research desk and Olivia Munn plays an on-air personality with multiple advanced degrees in economics, but a remarkable deficit in social skills. In the executive suite above them all is news director Charlie Skinner, brought to crafty, curmudgeonly, and authoritative life by Sam Waterston.

Sorkin told The New York Times he "thought it would be fun to write about a hyper-competent group of people," which he has certainly done. They're also just plain hyper; watching an episode can be like an adrenaline shot of sermonizing, sanctimony, sophistication, and jaw-dropping flights of fast-talking astuteness. Researching the show, Sorkin spent time embedded at MSNBC shadowing both Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews. He also dropped in on programs at Fox News and CNN that were the model for McAvoy and his Atlantis Broadcasting Network's show "News Night." The homework clearly informs The Newsroom's sense of verisimilitude, which is made even more realistic by the device of molding episodes about real news events of the recent past. The season unfolds from April 2010 to August 2011, so the action includes the newsroom's reporting on everything from the Gulf oil spill and the killing of Osama bin Laden to the teacher protest in Wisconsin and Arizona's controversial anti-illegal immigration bill. Personal politics enter the fray when the subject of the Koch brothers and the Citizens United decision come up, and there's a "News Night" uproar when the Fukushima nuclear crisis spills over into questions of ethics and personal responsibility. But for such a bunch of brilliant, zealous professionals there certainly is a lot of childish behavior, especially when it comes to everyone's love life. Biting social commentary dressed up as high-class entertainment sometimes dips into the soap opera-ish--which doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. A phone-hacking scandal that develops in the last episode will probably carry into the second season. It's also tantalizing to wonder what to expect when The Newsroom starts delving into the 2012 presidential election as seen through the lens of Aaron Sorkin's cutting pen and gift for putting lots of smart words into other people's mouths. --Ted Fry

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Two [Blu-ray]

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Two [Blu-ray] Overview

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Two travels warp speed into the next realm of adventure. Under the leadership of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), the Enterprise faces a season of new changes and big challenges. With Dr. Crusher on sabbatical, Chief Medical Officer Katherine Pulaski (Diana Muldaur) fills in. And Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) arrives as 10 Forward’s wise El-Aurian bartender. This voyage explores watershed moments, including Riker (Jonathan Frakes) experiencing the Klingon culture, Data (Brent Spiner) defending his humanity and the introduction of the Borg, a species of terrifying cybernetic conquerors threatening the fate of intelligent life. Presented for the first time on Blu-ray in 1080p high definition and digitally remastered 7.1 sound, this mission is not to be missed.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Two [Blu-ray] Specifications

To the delight of Star Trek fans everywhere, the stellar second season of The Next Generation (1988-89) belonged to Lieutenant Commander Data. As the Enterprise-D's resident android, Data (in the Emmy-worthy hands of Brent Spiner) would gain legal sentience in the season highlight "The Measure of a Man," and his increasingly "human" personality would refine itself in such diverse episodes as "Elementary, Dear Data" (Data as Sherlock Holmes), "The Outrageous Okona" (a misfire, but worthy from the Data perspective), and "Pen Pals." While Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher) took a sabbatical of then-unknown duration (gracefully replaced by original Trek guest star Diana Muldaur as Dr. Pulaski), the remaining bridge crew would match Data's vitality: Riker grew a handsome beard and proved his command potential; Worf became richly nuanced in "The Icarus Factor," and met his match (and mate) in guest Suzie Plakson's fiercely Klingon sexpot K'Ehleyr; Wesley matured admirably, despite continuing fan disapproval; Betazed culture emerged as Troi locked horns with her eccentric mother, Lwaxana (Majel Barrett, in a recurring role); and La Forge made good on his promotion to chief engineer while Chief O'Brien (Colm Meaney) flawlessly rode on Geordi's coattails.

In a crucial series development, Guinan (special guest Whoopi Goldberg) revealed a connection to Q in her helpful capacity as Ten-Forward's enigmatic host, while Q himself (John DeLancie) precipitated the Enterprise's first, fateful encounter with the Borg (in the suspenseful "Q Who?"). Through it all, Patrick Stewart brilliantly intensified all of Picard's renaissance qualities (especially in the dazzling "Time Squared"), exploring the captain's facets with equal measures of curiosity, fascination, amusement, courage, and philosophical insight. Despite its lame finale with the money-saving clip-show "Shades of Gray," season 2 charted a warp-nine course to the even better season 3. --Jeff Shannon

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Three [Blu-ray]

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Three [Blu-ray] Overview

Season Three of Star Trek: The Next Generationr took televised science fiction storytelling to new heights. Now, on high definition Blu-rayT, the seminal season of this beloved series is more spectacular and compelling to watch than ever. Experience such thought provoking episodes as "The Survivors," "Sins of the Father," "The Offspring" and one of the great cliffhangers in television history; Part One of "The Best of Both Worlds". like never before in glorious 1080p with 7.1 sound.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season Three [Blu-ray] Specifications

Star Trek: The Next Generation's third year was an important development in syndicated television. After two shaky years, Paramount nonetheless decided the franchise still had plenty to do. Their confidence was bolstered by two significant factors. First, cast uncertainties were finally settled: Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher) was back for good; Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) regretted her first-year departure, and so contrived a return in the Emmy Award-winning "Yesterday's Enterprise"; and Whoopi Goldberg happily continued her actor's-scale contributions.

Second, after the show had survived the previous year's writers' strike, new writing blood revitalized both characters and ideas: Data experienced fatherhood ("The Offspring"), Worf's Klingon heritage kick-started a huge story arc ("Sins of the Father"), and Picard got a saucy vacation ("Captain's Holiday"). There were memorable star cameos: John de Lancie played more mischief alongside Corbin Bernsen ("Déjà Q"); Dwight Schultz played truant in a gentle warning about addiction ("Hollow Pursuits"); and pleasing fans even more was Mark Lenard as Spock's dad ("Sarek"). The strongest evidence that TNG would continue for some time was the trend-setting cliffhanger finale. Fans and critics still agree that "The Best of Both Worlds" (properly introducing the Borg) was one of the greatest tricks ever pulled on TV to make audiences come back for more. --Paul Tonks

Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Overview

Studio: Hbo Home Video Release Date: 01/08/2013 Run time: 561 minutes Rating: Nr

Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) Specifications

Game of Thrones, the first book in author George R.R. Martin's sprawling fantasy saga A Song of Fire and Ice, serves as the basis for this brawny, lusty series about courtly intrigue and civil war in a sprawling fantasy kingdom. TV and fantasy veteran Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings, Sharpe's Rifles) leads the massive cast as the warrior-noble Eddard Stark, who reluctantly assumes the role as the Hand of the King after the mysterious death of his predecessor. The King, Robert Baratheon, has leadership of the lands of Westeros, a mythical country plagued by severe, decade-long shifts in weather. His rule is challenged by the exiled Prince Viserys Targaryen (Harry Lloyd), who trades his own sister (Emilia Clarke) for the allegiance of the Dothraki, a savage nomadic tribe led by Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa of the 2011 Conan the Barbarian). A shocking secret kept hidden by Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey, 300) leads to an upset in the balance of power and, ultimately, a challenge to the House of Stark to bring control to the bloodshed that threatens to overtake Westeros.

Fantasy has been a tricky genre for television--the scope required to bring the sweep and imagination to life is usually better suited for the big screen. But Game of Thrones neatly sidesteps the issue by virtue of the quality of the production at every level. Though the series is steeped in fantastic elements, from direwolves to dragons, series creators David Benioff (who wrote Troy and The Kite Runner, among others) and author D.B. Weiss (Lucky Wander Boy) have rooted the drama in the emotional landscape of its characters, which brings the end result closer to Benioff's humorous description of the show as "The Sopranos in Middle-Earth." Intricate plotting and direction with an eye for realism by a host of HBO veterans, including Tim Van Patten, Alan Taylor, and Daniel Minahan, underscores that notion, as does its stellar cast, which includes Mark Addy as Headey's husband, King Robert, Iain Glen as the faithful knight Ser Jorah Mormont, and Aiden Gillen (The Wire) as Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish. However, the proceedings are handily won by Peter Dinklage's Emmy-nominated turn as the cunning Tyrion, whose intellect is constantly disregarded due to his size. Of course, viewers can also tune in to simply enjoy the more visceral elements of Game of Thrones, which features quite a bit of medieval-style carnage, as well as an at-times unnecessary level of nudity, which feels like a network decision based on the amount of flesh on display in their other successful shows. Regardless, Game of Thrones is an entirely addictive experience for both fantasy and drama fans alike throughout its debut 10 episodes, all of which are featured on this multi-disc set. --Paul Gaita

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Third Season (Blu-ray)

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Third Season (Blu-ray) Overview

One of HBO’s signature shows, this one-hour drama chronicles the life and times of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Golden Globe winner Steve Buscemi), Atlantic City’s undisputed czar at a time when Prohibition proved to be a major catalyst in the rise of organized crime in America. Picking up 16 months after Season 2 ended, Season 3 begins on New Year’s Eve 1922-23. The Roaring ‘20s are about to start; though the economy is booming, alcohol has become scarce, competition is fierce, and gangster violence is heating up. Amidst this backdrop, Nucky, whose marriage to Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) has become a sham after she signed away his highway windfall to the church, faces new competition in the person of Gyp Rosetti (new cast member Bobby Cannavale), who builds a new strategic bulkhead between New York and Atlantic City in an effort to siphon off Nucky’s alcohol business. The conflict brings out the best and worst in Nucky, who proves his brutal mettle in a series of violent encounters – including a climatic facedown with Gyp in the Season 3 finale. New and familiar faces also undergo compelling metamorphoses as the 12 new episodes of Boardwalk Empire unfold.

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Third Season (Blu-ray) Specifications

After the shocking events that concluded season two, HBO's handsome and brooding Boardwalk Empire ushers in 1924 with the introduction of Bobby Cannavale's sadistic, easily offended gangster Giuseppe "Gyp" Rosetti. Though increasingly ruthless Atlantic City impresario Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) has streamlined his bootlegging operations, Gyp's rebuffed attempts to muscle in on the action leads to all-out war when he takes over the Taber Heights route to New York. Despite the complications, the money continues to roll in, though Nucky would rather live in squalor with his showgirl mistress, Billie (Meg Steedle). His wife, Margaret (Kelly Macdonald), supports him in public, but prefers personal time with his assistant, Slater (Charlie Cox), while Nucky's brother, Eli (Shea Whigham), returns from prison gaunt and desperate, leading him to move bottles of hooch for cackling, bowler-sporting Mickey (Paul Sparks).

With the death of his parents, young Tommy Darmody now lives with his opportunistic grandmother, Gillian (Gretchen Mol), who runs a gentleman's club, where Richard Harrow (Jack Huston) looks after him when he isn't putting his sharpshooting skills to use--thanks to Huston's fine work, Harrow remains surprisingly sympathetic for a man who claims to have killed 63 people (the same could be said of Stephen Graham's Al Capone, who dotes on his son). As ever, Boardwalk Empire is bursting with even more plot, but not everything works, like the Chicago misadventures of Michael Shannon's former Fed Van Alden, who segues from salesman to alcohol distiller. Shannon holds up his end of the bargain, including a spectacular office freak-out, but his storyline remains stranded from the central activity for too long, though he does finally connect with Capone toward the end, while the massacre of the finale sorts out the not-completely-bad guys from the totally irredeemable ones. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Complete Season Three [Blu-ray]

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Complete Season Three [Blu-ray] Overview

The Clone Wars goes back to the original Star Wars film when Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Luke Skywalker that he was once a Jedi knight the same as your father and that they fought together in the Clone Wars. Since that moment fans have been obsessed with what the clone wars were. This new TV series takes place immediately after the events of Star Wars-Episode II: Attack of the Clones. The series follows Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker and introduces us to some new characters such as Ahsoka Tano a girl Jedi knight as well as characters we already know.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Complete Season Three [Blu-ray] Specifications

The third season of the Clone Wars TV series has no major story arc: it's just a collection of adventures tied together by the recurring characters. Much of the first half of the season is devoted to diplomatic maneuvering in and out of the Senate. The filmmakers use the behind-the-scenes manipulations of the Trade Council and Banking Clan to make rather pointed political statements about the deregulation of the banks and the cost of the Separatist War impoverishing education, infrastructure, and health care on the planet Mandalore. The directors crank up the action in the second half of the season. When Count Dooku betrays his personal assassin Asajj Ventress, she tries to take revenge with some help from a new Sith killer, the unfortunately named Savage Opress. These episodes involve a world of witches that feels out of place in the Star Wars galaxy. The season comes to a slam-bang conclusion with five linked episodes involving the rescue of Jedi General Piel from a Separatist prison--an adventure that introduces a CG version of Chewbacca. The filmmakers appear to have spent most of their budget on special effects (rain, lava, explosions, lightning) and surface texturing (down to the dirt Padawan Ahsoka Tano gets on her skin). The animation is uneven at best, with many of the characters moving like weightless puppets. Not surprisingly, the Droids and robotic characters move more convincingly than the living ones. Jabba and the other Hutts lack the oozing, walrus-like bulk of the original, but the mask-faced Savage Opress executes some fancy battle moves. (Not rated: suitable for ages 10 and older: violence, violence against women, torture) --Charles Solomon

The "Clone Wars" goes back to the original Star Wars film when Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Luke Skywalker that he was once a Jedi knight the same as your father and that they fought together in the Clone Wars. The series follows Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker and introduces us to some new characters such as Ahsoka Tano a girl Jedi knight as well as characters we already know.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Complete Season One [Blu-ray] Specifications

The thrilling 3-D CGI animated series The Clone Wars serves as impressive proof that George Lucas's Star Wars universe could translate to a weekly television series that wouldn't lose the scope, imagination, or sense of adventure of the features. Like the 2008 feature film of the same name, the 22 episodes that compose the series' debut season (2008-2009) cover the action between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Here Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and the latter's Padawan, 14-year-old Ahsoka Tano (who takes some getting used to), along with a complex cast of supporting characters from the Galactic Republic (including R2-D2 and C-3PO, again voiced by Anthony Daniels), battle the Separatists, which count members of the Sith and other adherents to the Dark Side of the Force among its ranks. The action is plentiful and the scripts rich with the quasi-mystical and eminently quotable dialogue on which the Star Wars saga has earned its legendary status; one can imagine only the most stringent purist or CGI detractor finding fault with the first season of The Clone Wars.

The handsomely packaged four-disc set for season 1 includes a wealth of extras for those wishing to dig even deeper into the Clone Wars experience. Chief among the pleasant surprises is the widescreen aspect ratio for each episode, which gives greater depth and exposure to every single frame. Seven episodes are listed as Director's Cuts, which translates as an extra minute or two of action or dialogue--not earth-shattering, but they certainly enhance the enjoyment of each episode. Short featurettes, ranging between 5 and 7 minutes, accompany each episode and discuss production notes, character design, and other detail; these are expanded versions of the commentaries by supervising director Dave Filoni that were featured on StarWars.com, with additional contributions by series writer Henry Gilroy and sound designer David Acord, as well as new comments by Filoni. And there's a 64-page book of artwork from the series, including storyboards, concept design, and matte paintings, built into the body of the packaging itself. For the Easter Egg-inclined, a surprise awaits on each disc, including trailers for season 2 and animatics. --Paul Gaita

Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey Season 1 (Original U.K. Edition) [Blu-ray]

Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey Season 1 (Original U.K. Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

A star-studded cast (Dame Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Brendan Coyle, Dan Stevens) round out the glittering, gossipy, and beguiling men and women of this epic tale!

After a tragedy at sea claims the life of the presumed heir, Lord Crawley is faced with the possibility that the house he's loved his whole life might someday belong to a distant cousin he's never met. But before that can happen he must deal with his scandalous daughter, Lady Mary - considered by many to be the rightful heir to Downton. Even the staff has opinions on the family's affairs. And while most are devoted to the Crawleys, there are others whose selfishness and scheming do more than simply disrupt the well-oiled inner workings of the estate. As the servants' mischief escalates, even the most faithful employees begin to imagine a different life.

Pitting hundreds of years of British aristocracy against the tides of social upheaval and technical progress, under the looming shadow of World War I, will the fate of Downton and its family - above and below stairs - be resolved? Or will life be altered so dramatically that its master no longer matters?

Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey Season 1 (Original U.K. Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

An addictive blend of suds and social commentary, ITV's Downton Abbey brings a microcosm of Edwardian society together under one roof. Lord Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) and his family live a life of leisure, while a fleet of servants, including butler Carson (Jim Carter), attend to their every need, but two events conspire to shake things up: the sinking of the Titanic, which claims Crawley's heirs, and the return of his valet, Bates (Brendan Coyle). Since Crawley and Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) have three daughters, his distant solicitor cousin, Matthew (Dan Stevens), becomes heir to the estate. With that, the scheming begins, since Thomas the footman (Rob James-Collier) views Bates as an interloper and Crawley's mother, Violet (Maggie Smith), feels the same way about Matthew's mother, Isobel (Penelope Wilton).

In the tradition of the BBC's Upstairs Downstairs and Robert Altman's Gosford Park, for which writer-creator Julian Fellowes received an Academy Award, the royals, servants, and middle-class relations struggle to get along. Sniffs uptight maid Miss O'Brien (Siobhan Finneran), "Gentlemen don't work," but that doesn't stop Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael) from competing for Matthew's affections. Though it takes awhile to warm up to the tightest-wound characters, most everyone reveals their more vulnerable side before the first season comes to an end, and a new small-screen classic is born.

The entire sprawling cast is quite wonderful, particularly Bonneville, Carter, and James-Collier, who provide a fascinating study in contrasts (the latter is downright dastardly). Unlike the version that aired on PBS's Masterpiece Classic, this set offers seven parts rather than four. Extras include a featurette, in which cast and crew discuss the production, and an introduction to Hampshire's Highclere Castle, which doubles for Downton Abbey. The first season was a phenomenon in the United Kingdom, and Fellowes has promised a second season set during World War I. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
